A pyrimidine dimer is formed by the formation of covalent bonds between adjacent pyrimidines (i.e. T-T, C-C or T-C). UV radiation is one of the mutagens that leads to dimer formation. The formation of dimer leads to structural change (bending) in the backbone of a DNA molecule and during replication, the dimer will prevent base pairing and lead to premature termination of transcription. |
