Past Perefect Tense有3個用途：

1) 當你需要講述兩件過去的事件，這兩件事中時間較前的就要用Past Perfect Tense。
例子：
After Ihad hadmy dinner, I talked on phone with Mary.
Before I talked on phone with Mary, Ihad hadmy dinner.

2) 當你要講述一件過去的事需要在一個特定時間前完成，便需要用Past Perfect Tense。
例子：
By the end of May, Ihadalreadysavedenough money to buy a new computer.

3) 當你使用Reported (Indirect) Speech，你需要講述一件過去的事，你就需要使用Past Perfect Tense。
例子：
Mary said shehad gota great time the day before.

例子：
By yesterday night, I had watched two films continuously.

Simple Past Tense有以下用途：

1) 表示一件在一個過去特定時間發生的事情。
例子：
John rode bicycle yesterday.
2) 在兩件過去的事件中較後的事件。
例子：
After I had cooked my dinner, I watched TV.

3) 在一件事件發生時，有另一件需時較短的事件插入。
例子：
While I was doing my homework, the telephone rang.

4) 表示過往的習慣。
例子：
I always played basketball with my friends after school when I was in primary school.

5) 在Reported (Indirect) Speech中表達當時的事件。
例子：
Ms Chan said she had two sons.
