標題: 一個看起來容易，但連英文老師都有不同答案的一題英文問題
There ____ a cat and a dog.
a) is
b) are

If you choose Answer a, it is because a cat is single.
If you choose Answer b, it is because a cat+a dog=2animals, 2 animals is plural.

So, what is the answer?

A cat and a dog are there.<--其實是這樣的，只是沒有人這樣寫...
所以應該是用are吧...因為a cat and a dog已經不是單數...

偶的英文很差，以上為偶的愚見．．．

因為只是計a cat
應該唔計a dog.

佢話正如
"There are two boys and a girl"，
我老師話就算用 "are"，都只你關 "two boys"事，唔關 "a girl"事。
所以，這句也可寫成：
"There is a girl and two boys"

我問過很多老師，他們大部份說a是對的。
原因：
Original Sentences: There is a cat. There is a dog.
我們現在想把這2句combain一起，我們應著重的是第1句句子，所以combain後的句子為：
There is a cat and a dog.

我也選a。
記得我做過一個練習，
練習中說應跟據第一個詞語的數量(a cat)而決定用is/are...
is多數是正確的。

use other example is better~~be coz "something"is uncountable......

I mean "the dog and the cat" is "Something".
Since "Something" is Uncountable, thus "the dog and the cat" also.

I don't agree with your point. Why do you need to say that 'something' is 'a cat and a dog'?
'something' is uncountable. 'a cat and a dog' is countable.
How come you mixed them together?

I MEAN you should consider 'a cat and a dog' as ONE THING which is uncountable but not "a cat" and "a dog"

You still do not know what I mean.
You should ignore whether it is "a cat or a dog", but only Something (that is uncountable). You only need to consider it to be a matter.

如果你把'two cats and two dogs'當作'Something'。
那麼，
There is something.
Subsititue 'two cats and two dogs' into 'something',
There is two cats and two dogs.
那麼，你的解釋便不成立了。

MMLC的教學助理ShirXXX（風兒、Eric應該知）
說是B
前面的中四蘇前輩說是A，他的老師說過
永遠是看前面的那個，後面則不理

我亦贊同這說法

下午，我請教了數位同學，有人選A，有人選B。之後我請教了我的英文老師陳Sir（我眼中的英文權威），他一看後則微笑起來，也遲疑了一至兩秒
我說有些人選A，有人選B，應該兩個答案也沒有錯，他說是，並說這條題目很多Argument
指英文很多時有很多Argument
他亦說很多人，包括他自己作文會避免出現這種句子，叫我不要合起來寫

我自己認為，兩者也有道理．．．

my teacher said two are correct

it is the new version and the old version

in the old days people use"are"
but nowadays people use "is"or "are",both of them are correct
